The King’s Baton arrived in London on 26 May, marking a major moment of celebration in the capital.
The day’s events began at St Paul's Cathedral, where the Team England Baton was carried up the iconic steps by Jamell Anderson, alongside three athletes from Team England. The Baton was then formally received by The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Sheriff & Deputy Keith Bottomley of the City of London, before being blessed in a symbolic moment recognising unity and international friendship through sport.
From there, the Baton progressed to Temple Bar, where a traditional carpet guard and pikemen procession ceremonially admitted Team England’s Baton into the City of London. Continuing its journey, it made its way to Paternoster Square, passing through a celebratory crowd of children from local charities and community clubs.
At Paternoster Square, the Baton then took centre stage on a specially installed 3x3 basketball court, as part of Central London Alliance’s London Sports Festival, forming the focal point of a day of activity and engagement.
Following official speeches from representatives of Central London Alliance, the City of London and Team England, the space opened up to the public for a full programme of free activities. Workers, residents and visitors were invited to Play Their Part in basketball competitions, coaching sessions, Corporate Challenges and wheelchair 3x3 basketball experiences throughout the day - encouraging people of all ages and abilities to be involved and celebrate sport together.
The King’s Baton remained on display in Paternoster Square, offering members of the public a unique opportunity to take photographs with this iconic symbol, set against the backdrop of St Paul’s Cathedral.
